Admissions Success

A recent article in Newsweek Magazine outlined what college admissions officers are really looking for in their prospective students. Gone are the days of colleges looking for perfectly "packaged" students and applications. Ultimately, colleges are looking for students who are credible and, above all, genuine.
Who's Your Counselor?

Mr. Wornek (A-C) Mrs. Eagon (D-H) Mr. Inzunza (I-L)

Ms. Peters (M&AVID) Mrs. Gorham (N-Q)

Ms. Fellars (R&ELD) Mrs. Cross (S-Z)

Time to Start Planning

Freshmen: Now is the time to start thinking about college options. In your RBV Course Catalog, you will find a 4-year planner and a list of all CSU and UC minimum eligibility requirements. The UC requirements typically parallel most private/independent colleges also. Map out a plan for when you will take each required course. Also, get involved! Find a club, organization, or community outreach program that you would enjoy participating in and stick with it. Colleges look more for quality and consistency over quantity.

Sophomores: This year is an important year in terms of your selected courses. If you really enjoy or do well in a particular subject, think about taking the AP or Honors level of that course. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself. Also, think about taking on a leadership position in something you are involved in.

Juniors: Again, this is also an important year in terms of your selected courses. Choose your "electives" wisely and show yourself and potential colleges what you are really capable of achieving. Take on a leadership role or, if you are bold, try something new. Begin your college search and create a plan for visiting some schools, if possible.

Seniors: I know you have worked so hard but now is not the time to slack off! Keep going in those advanced courses or continue taking courses in that subject you love. Continue your college search but begin narrowing your focus to schools that you are seriously considering and that are a good match for you. Double check that you have met the minimum admission requirements for all schools you are considering. Don't forget the deadline dates and start looking for financial aid now.

Letters of Recommendation

Here are some frequently asked quesitons ans their answers:
Q. Who do I ask for a letter of recommendation?
A. You can ask a coach, teacher, counselor, administrator, or community member. Remember that those you know you well can write the best letter.
Q. How many will I need?
A. Typicall, colleges ask for up to three letters. Remember that many times, one of your letters must come from your counselor. Don't know your counselor very well? This is the best time for you to visit us so we can get to know you better.
Q. How much time do I give someone to write my letter?
A. PLEASE! Give a recommender at least two weeks to write a good letter for you. ***One of those weeks CANNOT include Thanksgiving or Winter break!
Q. Do I need to provide my recommender with any information?
A. Yes. Please make sure you give your recommender a completed copy of your Brag Sheet.
Q. Do I provide the postage for my letters of recommendation?
A. Yes, always provide your recommender with an addressed envelope that is stamped. You should not fill in your return address information. That needs to be the school's address. Also, for counselors, please provide 2 stamps for each letter. We are required to send additional paperwork with your letter and many times, it is heavier than a regular piece of mail.

Applying to Private Colleges???

If there are any private or independent colleges you plan on applying to, make sure you consider the following to avoid any surprises:

1. Visit each school's website to check their individual admission requirements. All schools are different so make sure you double-check your information for each school.
2. Start thinking about people you can ask for letters of recommendation. The people who know the most about your whole life, not just academics, can write the best letter.
3. When applying to schools that use the Common Application, check to ensure that you also have and additional supplemental forms that they might require.
4. Tripple-check each school's application deadline!!!!
